York College Associate Head Wrestling Coach Greg Smith has been selected as one of 20 coaches representing all divisions of collegiate wrestling to receive a scholarship to participate in the Annual National Wrestling Coaches Association/ Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coaching Leadership Academy.
The academy will be held May 22-23 in Edwardsville, Illinois, at the John Davis Wrestling Center. This is the second time a York College wrestling coach has been chosen to participate in an NWCA Academy. Head Coach Ramon Diaz attended in 2011.
Smith’s expenses for the Leadership Academy, including airfare, tuition, hotel, and registration for the academy will be covered by the scholarship he received, compliments of NWCA corporate sponsors. This two-day academy consists of small group discussions with peers and mentor coaches on various issues relating to coaching wrestling at faith-based institutions.
As part of the academy, Smith will be completing a Coaching Leadership course through Michigan State University and taking part in a 360-degree program evaluation prior to making the trip to Illinois. He will also be assigned a veteran coach mentor by the NWCA to work closely with over the course of the 2013-14 wrestling season.
“I am grateful to be selected to be a part of this academy,” says Smith. “I look forward to the opportunity to network and learn from other successful coaches and administrators who view wrestling as a platform to positively impact students’ lives and share the message of Jesus Christ.”
