York College invites the public to the 2014 spring commencement exercises on Thursday, May 8 at 10:00 am. The event will take place in the Campbell Student Activity Center.
Senator Greg Adams, speaker of the Nebraska Legislature, will deliver the commencement address to the class of 2014.
Senator Greg Adams was raised in York, Nebraska and graduated from York High School in 1970. He attended Wayne State College and earned both his bachelor’s and his master’s degrees there.
Adams began his teaching career at York High School in 1976. He taught American government and economics at York for 30 years, served as social studies department chairman for 21 of those years, and has studied in Japan. During his career, Adams has earned a number of teaching awards, including the Outstanding High School Teacher Award from the University of Kansas in 1987; the Nebraska Outstanding Young Educator Award from the Nebraska Sertoma Club in 1988; and York News-Times/York Public Schools Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence. In 2004, Adams was a finalist for the Teaching Excellence Award from the Nebraska State Education Association.In 1986 Adams began his political career when he was elected to the York City Council. During his 10-year tenure, he served as vice president and president of the council. In 1996 Adams was elected mayor of York, a position that he held until his election to the legislature in 2006. Adams has also served on the executive board of the League of Nebraska Municipalities. In 1997 he was appointed by the governor to the Nebraska Information Technology Commission and completed his second term of service in April 2006.Adams is serving his second term in the legislature. He served as the chairman of the education committee from 2009-2013. He also served on the revenue committee, and he represented the Legislature on the Midwest Higher Education Commission. On January 9, 2013, Adams was chosen to be the speaker of the Nebraska Legislature.Greg and his wife Julie, also a York native, have three children and two grandchildren.
