Online Classes Coming To York College

By Sue Roush

Beginning in March, York College will offer online courses leading to bachelor degree completion programs in Business Administration and General Studies.  They will also offer a program in Medical Coding.  “There are many people who, for a lot of reasons, cannot attend York College in person.” states Steve Eckman, President of York College, “We are excited about expanding our mission and reaching out to people who want what York has to offer, but are unable to come to the campus.”

When Eckman came to York College in January 2009, one of the first things he did as president was to recruit Dr. Jackie Humphrey to come to York and begin the online program.  “It is a blessing to have the opportunity to share in the experiences of learners of all ages utilizing the amazing technology that allows quality education for distance learning.” states Humphrey.  “I am thankful that York College has expanded its influence and mission to reach out to learners of all ages through online education.”

York College is partnering with Learning House of Louisville, Kentucky, to provide high quality programs and an online delivery method that is user-friendly and marketable to prospective students.  To gain admittance into the bachelor’s degree programs, an individual must be at least 25 years old and have completed 40-60 hours from an accredited college or university.  For admittance into the medical coding program an individual must be at least 25 years old and have a high school diploma or passing GED scores.  Other courses are also available along with a plan for more degree programs to come.

Prior to coming to York College, Humphrey was most recently working as a nursing home administrator stating, “Recent federal mandates require that all medical billing must be electronic for Medicare and Medicaid Reimbursement by the year 2012, opening the door for job opportunities in the field of medical coding.” Humphrey continues, “This means all doctors, clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare providers must have trained personnel in place who can do this kind of coding.  York College is excited to be offering this specialized training with our online medical coding certification.”

President Eckman adds, “While the online experience will be different in many ways, it will allow students to interact with our great faculty and have an educational experience with a spiritual dimension.”
