NAIA Pitcher of the Week

Josh Trejo strikes out 14 in one-hit shutout

Josh TrejoIt was announced to the YC student body in Tuesday morning's chapel that Josh Trejo was named the MCAC Pitcher of the week. A couple of hours later, the stakes were raised as that announcement was followed by Trejo's honor as NAIA National Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Head baseball coach Nick Harlan was informed by the national office today that Trejo was selected based on his performance during the week of April 18 - 24 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Trejo tossed a one-hit shutout against Doane College (Neb.) as the Panthers took a 4-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader on April 23. In his seven innings of work, the junior left-handed pitcher fanned 14 batters and walked three. Trejo, a native of Union City, Calif., owns a record of 5-2 and has a 2.89 ERA in 65 1/3 innings.

"Trejo has been impressive all year long," said YC athletic director Jared Stark. "He has faced our opponents' top starter for the entire year so his record might not be indicative of just how dominant he has been.  We're blessed to have a student-athlete of his caliber. He's someone that our coaches have really invested in, and they believe he has unlimited potential."

After winning the conference championship last year, the Panther baseball team is once again atop the MCAC standings, one game out of first. With a 31-12 record, the Panthers are scheduled to play conference opponent Central Christian in a four-game series this weekend at McPherson, Kansas.

Congratulations to Josh and the entire baseball program on their success!
