York Tops MCAC Honorees

Varmall named MCAC Player of the Year, Deal named Coach of the Year

The Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference announced the 2012-13 All-MCAC Men’s Basketball Team Wednesday in advance of the opening round of the conference tournament this weekend. York College topped the list with four players honored, including Player of the Year accolades.

Thadd Varmall, a 6'3" senior guard from Dallas, Tex., and Marcus Johnson, a 6'1" senior guard from Leavenworth, Kan., were named to the All-MCAC Team. Honorable Mention All-MCAC went to Wichita Falls senior guard Desmond Strickland and Keller, Tex., junior guard Dylan Brewer. Varmall was also named MCAC Player of the Year and head coach Delton Deal was named MCAC Coach of the Year.

Varmall, who was a 2012 NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, leads the team in scoring, averaging 20/gm and in rebounds with 8.24/gm. This is his second time to be named All-MCAC. Johnson is the second leading scorer for the Panthers averaging 15/gm and leads the team in steals with 54 on the season.

For Strickland, this is his third year in a row to be named Honorable Mention All-MCAC. He has led in 3-pointers all four years with the program, shooting an impressive 40% as a Panther for a career total of 313. Brewer leads the team in assists, averaging nearly 4/gm for a total of 115 on the season. Brewer and Strickland both average 10 points per game.

Deal

As MCAC Coach of the Year, Deal is in his third year as head coach and has led the team to a 22-7 record on the season, 12-4 in conference play. In his previous two seasons, the Panthers were 15-15 and 16-16. York was named the regular season conference champions, sharing the MCAC title with Bellevue University.

They are the No.1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will host the tournament starting this Friday. The Panthers will play Haskell Indian Nations University at 7:30 p.m. in the Freeman Center. The winner of the tournament will represent the MCAC in the NAIA National Tournament.

Lincoln

The women's team also had a player recognized by the conference coaches. Sara Lincoln, 5'10" senior guard from Bartlett, Neb., was named Honorable Mention All-MCAC. Lincoln leads the team in points per game at 14.17, steals (46), and blocked shots (16). Under first-year head coach Matt Madole, the Lady Panthers will also be playing in the MCAC Tournament this Friday, taking on the No.1 seed College of Saint Mary at 7:30 p.m. in Omaha.
