York College wrestlers Bryan Williams of Roseville, California, and Jamel Wheatley of Lafayette, Louisiana, have once again qualified for the NAIA National Wrestling Championships to be held March 3-5, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Head Coach Ramon Diaz feels these men will make a good showing at nationals.
“Bryan keeps the coaching staff on their toes with the unique flare he brings to the team. As a senior, he has really become a leader among the guys.” Diaz continued, “Jamel is unpredictable. His height and leverage make him difficult to wrestle. He works hard to improve every day.”
Four additional athletes have qualified for the national championships this year. They are Ithaca, Nebraska sophomore Emerson “Miles” Negley, Mandan, North Dakota junior Josiah Simburger, Jake McCoy, a junior from Coos Bay, Oregon, and Philips, Nebraska sophomore Raymond Johnson.
“Miles has great character and a servant heart. His attitude is a positive influence on the team, as well as his desire to improve everyday,” said Diaz. “Josiah brings a unique dynamic to the team. He is a consistent and steady competitor.”
“Jake is a student of the sport. He brings a quiet intensity to the room that makes those around him better.” Diaz continued, “Ray is a sleeping giant. He has a heart of a lion, and has made great strides of improvement this year. His never quit attitude is his greatest strength.”
Congratulations to these student athletes and the coaching staff.
