2008 YC Commencement

Smith Kite

Smith KiteAn entire nation is looking at you because you are the hope of the United States of America. There are no days that are not serious for those who are the children of God.

It's time to consider the priorities of your life... that you can accomplish something worthwhile for your neighbor as well as yourself.

An old man brought his daughter to college. He taught her, shaped her, trained her as best that he and his wife knew how. She'd be meeting problems that she never had before. Quick decisions would have to be made. He grabbed her with both of his loving hands and said, "Honey, just remember what you are."

You and York College are doubly blessed. You have been taught and you've had an example set before you. Your teachers are interested in you and what you'll become and how you can serve the Lord in your life. You can compete with the world, but as Jesus said, "You are in the world but not of the world." In the same way, God tries to shape us.

...As Joseph remembered who and what he was as a slave, as a prisoner, and even when he was elevated as a ruler of all Egypt, remember who you are. ...I can let people know what it means to be a son of God. We enjoy the successes in life more, but sometimes the failures teach us more about who we are and who we're called to be.

...Abraham was told, "I'll make your name great. I'll bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you." God also said to Abraham, "Be thou a blessing." We need to learn how to become a blessing to our family, our children, our neighborhood...

I was taught that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Jesus talked about that straight line. When you walk along that straight line, you don't have anything to be ashamed of. We'll make mistakes; we need to try harder.

A young man's life had been shattered; his nation destroyed. But he was chosen with other handsome, smart young men to be in the King's service. He said no to the king's rich food. ...Daniel remembered who he was and God was with him. Even when they wanted to get rid of him, they couldn't find anything wrong with him except in the way he worshipped his God.

...Daniel knew what the whole thing was about. He didn't forget who he was. He knew they'd catch him, but God helped him.

The Bible is the only way you can know God. Read it. Know it. Know who you are and don't forget who you are. Live in such a manner that when you look into the eyes of Jesus that you will not be either ashamed or afraid.

As the Bible says, "Well done good, faithful servant. You've been faithful; enter into the joy of my glory."

May it be so with you.
