Sara Firm Recital

Known around the campus for her wonderful voice and high spirit, Sara Firm gave her Senior Vocal Recital Saturday at the York College Prayer Chapel. The recital included pieces in English, German, Spanish, and Musical Theatre.
When choosing songs for her performance, Firm said that there were several requirements that she had to meet. She had to ensure that she covered the standard vocal foreign languages, which are French and German, and she needed to include songs in English as well. For their third foreign language, most YC music students tend to choose Italian. Firm, however, after having previously taken a few years of Spanish classes, decided, along with Dr. Adrienne Dickson, to switch out her Italian for Spanish songs instead.
In an interview with the Panther Press, Sara said, “I think the audience will enjoy the little taste of Spanish culture and flair that these pieces bring." Musical Theatre pieces are optional to have included in one’s Senior Vocal Recital, but for Firm, it was a must. Firm knew she “definitely wanted to include it.”
In total, Firm performed 22 songs. In her words: “by far the most I have ever sung at one time!” Included in her repertoire was an entire song cycle, which is a collection of pieces that flow together to tell a story. Robert Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben, which means A Woman’s Life and Love, contained eight pieces and told the story of a young woman and the man of her dreams. When asked about singing this many songs for one recital, Firm said, “It is a daunting task, but I can’t think of any piece that I would have wanted to cut out!”
When asked what she was most looking forward to with her performance Firm answered that it was being able to share her hard work with the campus and community.
“I have had a difficult journey to vocally get to where I am right now, but with the help of Dr. Dickson, Dr. Roush, my family, and my friends, I feel like I am ready,” said Firm. “I am proud of how hard I’ve worked to prepare this performance of a lifetime, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to share it with people I love!”
