YC Class of 2010Kristie Holoch delivers commencement address
Family and friends gathered in the York City Auditorium Saturday morning to witness the York College class of 2010, some 63 in all, receive their bachelor's degrees.
Addressing this year's graduates was Mrs. Kristie Holoch of York. Holoch, a Senior Vice President of Retail Banking at Cornerstone Bank, challenged graduates to go beyond expectations in their careers and in service to their community. Holoch focused on the practical aspects of life as the graduates enter the a tough jobs environment. Aside from congratulations, she urged the class of 2010 to pursue great communication, hard work (including punctuality) and a willingness to keep on learning.
"You've got to communicate, and I don't mean texting," Holoch said, as she emphasized the crucial nature of serving customers and getting on with co-workers. She also talked about the importance of going above and beyond a job description if students want to make a difference in their work and in their lives.
One of the advisors for her talk was her own son, a recent graduate, who had seen the importance of learning beyond college. Holoch shared with the students her firsthand experience about the critical need to learn the culture of your employer for success.
Dr. L. Ray Miller, Vice President for Academic Affairs, made the Dean’s Award presentation to honor an outstanding senior. The award is the highest academic honor given by the faculty to a graduate whose involvement and leadership are matched by their high academic success. This year's recipient was Amber Soderholm who graduated Summa Cum Laude in history. Amber served as this year’s student body president and is the daughter of Bob and Marti Soderholm of York.
Miller then presented the Dale R. Larsen Teacher of Achievement Award to Dr. Frank Wheeler who chairs the Division of Biblical Studies. Recipients of the award are nominated by other faculty members and are considered on the basis of teaching, service, spiritual commitment, attitude, and dedication to York College as demonstrated in activities outside the classroom.Dr. Wheeler is a Professor of Bible and completed his 22nd year at YC.
At the conclusion of these honors, President Eckman shook each graduate's hand as he presented them with their earned diploma. Seniors were then hooded by a relative or close friend. The color of the hoods represents the institution conferring the degrees as well as signifies the area of study to which the degree pertains.
