Panthers Roar During Spring Break
Baseball Wins First Ever Against LCU Chaps and Men's Basketball Advances in Tournament Play
BASEBALL The York College Panthers took a big win on Thursday against #5 ranked Lubbock Christian University of Lubbock, Texas. It was the first win in Panther history against the perennial contender. It was the second of two games against LCU with Lubbock winning the first contest.
Other than the big win against LCU, the Panthers went 4-4 over the break, including wins against Dallas Christian University and Tabor College. In a grueling pre-season schedule, Panther baseball will compete against a series of conference champions during four consecutive weekends. Included in the line-up so far, was last year's GPAC champion Mount Marty, with the Panthers winning three of a four-game series. Next up on March 15, YC will face Avila University who was last year's Heart of America conference champion.
BASKETBALL In men's basketball, the season continues as the Panther's hung on to defeat the Central Baptist College Mustangs 69-65. This is the farthest YC has advance in the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region Tournament. Tonight at 8 p.m. the Panthers will play against tournament host, Mid-America Christian.
Coach Delton Deal said, "we were a bit rusty and did not play well, so we trailed most of the game but I always felt we had the ability to come back. Corey Standerfer was big for us as he has been all season." Standerfer led the team with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Late in the game, sharp-shooting guard Desmond Strickland hit 3 shots in a row from beyond the arc to give the Panthers a boost for the win.
A win tonight would propel the Panthers into the central region championship on Saturday and a win at that level would send them to nationals. The team holds a 15-14 record this year, a major shift for a team that two seasons ago managed to win only three games.
