Baseball Wins MCAC Tournament!
York to play in Opening Round of NAIA Championship
With a one-run lead going into the bottom of the 7th, Brett Nathan hit a two-run homer with two outs to give York the 3-0 lead over Bellevue. The Panthers were able to hold off the #25 ranked Bruins through the final two innings with closers Matt Blaemire and Gene Felise to get the win and claim the MCAC Tournament Championship.
Phoenix, Ariz., right handed pitcher, Isidro Carrizoza Jr. gave the Panthers seven innings, giving up seven hits to Bellevue. York finished the game with 5 hits behind Nathan's homerun. York is now 39 and 17 on the year and will receive an automatic berth into the opening round of the NAIA Championships which will be played May 10 - 14 at nine different sites across the country. Each location features a five-team double elimination tournament. The 45 qualifiers for the National Championship Opening Round tournaments were announced on May 6 and York will play in the Oklahoma City Bracket, hosted by Oklahoma City University.
Head coach Nick Harlan told the York News-Times that the three-game series was a grind, especially on Friday.
“I just felt that more than anything, we were prepared to play and very confident,” said Harlan. “Our pitchers were able to get ahead, we were able to grab the lead and put the pressure on the other teams. When your pitchers throw strikes early in the count, good things will happen. Our defense was phenomenal and we turned a lot of double plays which got us out of what could have been some jams.”
Game 1 of the opening round in Oklahoma City will feature York (39-17) against Mount Marty (26-26) on May 10 at 11:00 a.m.
Congratulations Coach Harlan and Coach Walth and the entire Panther baseball program on an incredible season so far and good luck with your NAIA Opening Round!
