Groundbreaking held for Campbell Activity Center

A groundbreaking ceremony for the $1.4 million Colis and Dolores Campbell Activity Center was held during the final chapel of the school year. The May 4, 2012 activity launched the beginning of construction on the 15,600 square-foot multi-use facility that is focused on enhancing student life at York College.

The building's namesakes, Colis and Dolores Campbell were joined by David Lynn (YC1974), trustee, Charlie Watts (YC1965), trustee and YC Letterman and YC President Steve Eckman (YC1971) in turning the first shovels of dirt. A second round made up of students, Thomas Lichty, Joshua Baerg, Alice Hackett, Sarah VanDeusen and Tyler Cox, helped by turning a second shovel-full of dirt at the celebration.

“We are pleased to honor the Campbells with this facility and with this event,” says York College President Steve Eckman. “The Campbells mean so much to this campus. The Campbell Activity Center will continue their legacy of impacting students. We are grateful for the anonymous gift that makes this all possible.”

Following the ceremony, a reception was held to honor the Campbells along with their daughters, Pattie Sue Edwards(YC1975) and Betty Lou Knowles (YC1969), and other family. During the reception, Campbell joined Eckman and general contractor, Drew Jensen of Jensen Lumber Company, in signing contracts to begin construction. The target completion date is early 2013.
