The award honorees are Brent Smith and Crystal Rush, seniors from Ponca, Neb.; and Carrie Berzins, a senior from Aurora, Colo.

"This award recognizes the best of the best in our student-athlete population,” says York College Athletic Director Jared Stark. “These students are great examples for their teammates and fellow students in all areas of their college experience. All three are serious competitors who want to win--but winning isn't the most important thing in their lives. They exude strong character.”

The recognition is largely based on the students’ academic achievements, says Stark, but it also takes into account impact on their specific sports program and involvement in other areas on campus. The recipients are chosen by a committee of staff members from the athletic department and members of the faculty.

This is the second year in a row for Smith to be honored with the award. He is an accounting major and a point-guard on the men’s basketball team. He has been captain of the team for three years. Stark describes him as “a sharp-shooting player with a 4.0 GPA.”

Crystal Rush is in her final year of eligibility on the volleyball team, where she is a middle blocker and has been a starter for the past three years. She is majoring in secondary social studies education, with athletic training and coaching endorsements. She maintains a 3.98 GPA. This year she has served as an assistant athletic trainer. In April, she helped to organize a 5k benefit event for a ministry that serves the homeless.

As a member of the soccer team, Carrie Berzins has been named an all-conference player every season she has been at YC. She carries a 3.8 GPA in sports management and has also been involved in campus ministries and student government.

“All three of these students will be huge successes when they get into the real world and have been amazingly successful at York College,” says Stark.
