Local businessman Lonnie Berger received the inaugural York College Good Neighbor award today in chapel.
Berger has owned the York Wendy’s restaurant since 1983. He serves many schools and non-profits in the community with profit sharing events where a portion of the proceeds on a given night go to the school or charity.
Berger has been a longtime supporter of student mission trips at York College. Many YC students have benefited from “Wednesdays at Wendy’s” promotions, which involve a portion of the dinner hour profits going to the students’ fundraising for missions.
President Steve Eckman presented Berger him with a Good Neighbor plaque. Eckman described Berger as “a godly man who cares about Christ, cares about the gospel, and cares about people.” The students responded with a standing ovation for Berger. “It’s humbling to be able to be a part of whatever God is doing, wherever that may lead,” said Berger, accepting the award.
Eckman says that the college will continue to present the Good Neighbor award on an occasional basis. A plaque recognizing the award recipients will be hung in the Mackey Center.
