The What Works Lunch is a professional development opportunity hosted at the Academic Resource Center at Levitt for staff and faculty members. On March 22, the event had an opportunity to host guest speakers from Creighton University’s Philosophy for Children (P4C) program to provide the community with an opportunity to learn about this unique education program for children.
During the What Works Lunch event, guest speakers from Creighton’s Philosophy department presented, “The Power of Wonder: A Practice of Philosophy for Children at Schools,” which gave examples of how to introduce students to philosophical and logical principles in a fun and engaging method. One example they shared demonstrated how Plato’s Allegory of the Cave can be used to introduce philosophy to children. The P4C guest speakers also presented the history of their program and the work they’ve done overseas in China and, more recently, Ukraine.
Guest speakers were Dr. Jinmei Yuan, Mr. Conor Sullivan, Mr. Joel Deman, Miss Sofie Hartman, Miss Grace Garton, Mr. Zach Haefele, Mr. James Barry, and Mr. MJ Martin.
The What Works Lunch was attended by faculty, staff, students and members from the local community. Some professors even brought their class to the event. This event was also live streamed.
“It was a joy working with the Creighton team to create a What Works presentation that gave YU faculty, staff, and students a picture of P4C and its impact across the world,” shared Leanna Hawley, director of the Academic Resource Center and host of the What Works Lunch event.
