The York University Theatre Department will present its annual Emerging Director One-Act plays Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16, starting at 7:30 PM.
Two shows will take place in the Scene Shop Theatre in Gurganus Hall on the university campus. The evening of one-acts is open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required.
The first show of the night is Inside the Department of the Exterior by Philip Hall, which is directed by Leah and Eli Lane-Embray. Inside the Department of the Exterior shows a man who goes to his local Zoning office with the simple request of wanting to install a new mailbox. But with all the forms, questions, and bureaucratic red tape, this "simple request" is about to get a whole lot more complicated.
The cast includes C.J. Arnold and Cheyenne Kiely.
The second show of the night is Riverview, Tape 23 by Colleen Neuman, which is also directed by Leah and Eli Lane-Embray. Riverview, Tape 23 shows Kathy, a journalist frustrated by disappointments in her job and in her personal life, is sent to a nursing home to interview the residents about "the good old days." Today's interview is with Lydia, an uncooperative, opinionated elderly woman who entertains herself by faking senility, asking pointed questions about Kathy's divorce and needling Kathy about her appearance. But there are also gritty revelations about the hard fight that Lydia's life has been that puncture the myth of "the good old days" and make Kathy's troubles seem insignificant.
The cast includes Kaylee Collins, Alex Harwell and Jaelyn Palser.
Leah ‘24 and Eli Lane-Embray ‘23 are YU alumni who live in York, Neb. Leah works at Little Jewels Child Care & Enrichment Center as a child care teacher and Eli works at York University as the digital communications coordinator.
Gurganus Hall is located at 938 Kiplinger Avenue.
