It is with profound gratitude and a touch of bittersweet sentiment that York University announces the forthcoming retirement of Dr. Clark Roush from his role as the York University Singers Conductor, effective at the conclusion of Spring Semester 2026. Dr. Roush—affectionately known as “D.R.” to generations of students, colleagues, and alumni—is currently in his 40th year at York, having served YU since 1986. In addition to conducting University Singers, he holds pivotal leadership positions on campus, including endowed chair for the performing arts, music department chair, and professor of music. His leadership has been integral to the performing arts and the academic rigor of the music department.
Dr. Roush’s legacy is marked by decades of outstanding achievement both on and off campus. Throughout his distinguished career, he has been frequently sought after as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for various events. His exceptional work has been recognized institutionally and regionally; he is a two-time recipient of the Dale R. Larsen Teacher of Achievement award and has held a gubernatorial appointment as a board member of the Nebraska Arts Council. Under his direction, the University Singers have garnered significant visibility, appearing at the state conventions of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association and the Nebraska Music Education Association. They have also performed alongside the Omaha Symphony Chamber Orchestra, the Abendmusik Choir, and notably, appeared with Eric Whitacre in New York City.
As we prepare for this transition, we encourage alumni, students, and community members to join us in celebrating Dr. Roush’s commitment to musical excellence by attending the upcoming University Singers Winter Tour scheduled for January. We thank Dr. Roush for his deep dedication and commitment to York University—and for the enduring legacy of D.R. that lives in the hearts of so many.
