York University is pleased to announce the creation of two new awards honoring longtime university friend Mary Jean Eisenhower, recognizing her connection to York University, her commitment to the education and leadership of young people, and her lifelong dedication to carrying forward the legacy of her grandparents.

The Mary Jean Eisenhower Scholarship will award $1,000 to each participant in the Presidential Leadership Institute (PLI), a program Eisenhower has helped facilitate since 2015, to support their studies at York University.

The Mary Jean Eisenhower Student Leadership Award will recognize a student who demonstrates exceptional leadership and service to the York community. The award will be presented annually at the All-University Banquet, with the recipient selected by a panel of faculty and staff.

"Mary's impact on York University and its students is profound..."

While the Presidential Leadership Institute has been an important part of Eisenhower's relationship with York University, it is just one of the many ways she has invested in the university and its students. She has participated in RoundUp, presented in history classes, and served as a graduation speaker in 2016, at which point she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of her global humanitarian work and her support for York University. Over the years, she has spoken to countless groups on the York campus, sharing her experiences and personal stories in ways that have helped make history come alive for students

Eisenhower has also hosted York students and groups at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas, where she now resides. Her tours have offered students a personal connection to the history of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Mamie Eisenhower. Students have especially enjoyed hearing her stories about her grandparents, including her memories and insights into Mamie's famous dresses.

“Mary has been a great friend to the university for many years,” said YU Chancellor Dr. Steve Eckman. “In her work with us, she has touched the lives of countless teenagers who have had the honor and privilege not only to hear her speak but to know her and be encouraged by her to do good in this world. She has always been generous with her time, experience and wisdom, and she has done so without remuneration. We are proud that we can forever honor her legacy at York University.”

Mary Jean Eisenhower has an international reputation as a speaker and representative of the Eisenhower legacy, participating in WWII memorial events in the United States and abroad. She also served from 1999 to 2022 as CEO, President, and Chairman Emeritus of People to People International, the citizen-diplomacy organization her grandfather founded in 1956. The organization's mission was to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities that bring people of different countries and cultures into direct contact with one another.

For the last decade, Eisenhower has partnered with York University to help develop leadership in young people and inspire students through the personal stories and experiences of her life with her grandfather. Her willingness to share her time and knowledge has made a lasting impression on the York community.

“Mary's impact on York University and its students is profound,” Eckman said. “Her connection with our students, her commitment to education and leadership, and the stories she shares about her family and her experiences have enriched our university in ways that will continue for generations. We are proud to associate her name with York University through these awards.”
