York University has been selected as a recipient of the Nebraska

Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Partnership Award for 2024.

“York University has been an exceptional partner to the NDCS,” wrote Rob Jeffreys, Director at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. “They provide an opportunity for the population of the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) to receive a comprehensive, quality higher education. While professors teach their subjects incredibly well, they also instill value and worth. The power of encouragement that is shared with the women of NCCW is restorative in a way that positively impacts the rehabilitation of each individual.”

In 2016, York University piloted the Second Chance Educational Program at NCCW. The Second Chance Educational Program is designed for participants to earn an Associate of Arts (A.A.) in General Studies via an on-site 60-hour course of college study. Since the program started, there have been two cohorts of students that have graduated, totalling 22 graduates from the NCCW.

The award was accepted by York University’s Provost Dr. Shannon Leinen, Dr. Erin DeHart (Professor of Education, Program Instructor,  and NCCW Book Club Director), Dr. Clark Roush (NCCW Instructor), and Mrs. Tori Odom (VLS Grant Manager for the NCCW) at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Annual Award ceremony on May 29, 2024.
